Terms of service

These terms apply to the Philosophilo app and website. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

Your account

• You must be 13 or older to use Philosophilo.
• You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details private and for what happens under your account.
• One account per person. Do not share it or use someone else's.
• You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app.

What you may do with the app

We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Philosophilo on Apple devices you own or control, under Apple's App Store terms. You may not copy, resell, reverse-engineer, or scrape the app or its content, or use automated tools to extract sessions, readings, or dialogue.

Content in the app

• Passages are quoted from named translations. Most are in the public domain. A few short excerpts from copyrighted translations are used under fair dealing and are marked with their translator.
• Readings, questions, course structure, mentor portraits, and design belong to Philosophilo. You may quote from them for personal, non-commercial use with attribution.
• Your journal and dialogues belong to you. We store them only to show them back to you and to generate mentor replies. We do not publish them or use them to promote the app.

The mentor dialogue

Mentor replies are generated by an AI language model speaking in the style of a historical philosopher. They are not the philosopher, they are not endorsed by any estate, and they can be wrong, incomplete, or anachronistic. Treat them as a study aid, not as fact, and never as medical, legal, financial, or mental health advice. If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis line.

Do not use the dialogue to generate content that is illegal, harassing, or intended to harm anyone. We may limit or end access to the dialogue if it is misused.

Payment

Philosophilo is free to download. If we offer paid features, they will be sold through Apple's in-app purchase system, and Apple's terms for pricing, billing, renewal, and refunds will apply. We will make prices clear before you buy.

Availability

We work to keep the app available, but we may change, pause, or remove features, mentors, or sessions, and we may suspend the service for maintenance. We provide the app as it is, without promises that it will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Ending your access

You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms or misuse the service. If we close the app entirely, we will give you notice and time to export your journal.

Liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Otherwise, to the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything arising from the app is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. We are not responsible for indirect losses, such as loss of profit or data.

Apple

These terms are between you and Philosophilo, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app and is not responsible for any claims relating to it. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For material changes we will notify you in the app at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the app after that date means you accept the new terms.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of [country], and disputes will be heard by its courts. If you live in the UK or the EU, you keep the protections of the consumer law where you live.
